70th International Festival of Contemporary Music Concludes with Increased Attendance

The 70th International Festival of Contemporary Music, known as Biennale Musica 2026, ended on October 24 with a 4% rise in audience numbers, including a significant international presence.

The 70th International Festival of Contemporary Music, titled A Child of Sound, concluded on October 24, 2026. The festival reported a 4% increase in attendance, with 40% of the audience arriving from abroad. This marks a notable international engagement with the event.

Caterina Barbieri, the festival’s director, described the theme “child of sound” as a symbol of both revolution and healing, emphasizing music’s potential for communion and spiritual elevation. This thematic focus shaped the festival’s programming and artistic direction.

A key event during the festival was Musica Libera, held in the cloister of the Casa di reclusione femminile Giudecca, a women’s detention centre in Venice. Musica Libera centered on the therapeutic value of music and was the result of workshops where women from the institution collaborated with young musicians from Biennale College Musica and their mentors.

The festival also featured the work Canons, which is based on a musical technique where a melody is successively imitated by different voices, creating overlapping lines and evolving polyphonic textures. This approach highlighted the festival’s commitment to exploring innovative forms in contemporary music.

The increased attendance and strong international participation at the 70th edition underscore the festival’s ongoing role as a platform for contemporary music and cultural exchange.

Why it matters

The festival’s growth in audience and international reach highlights the expanding global appeal of contemporary music. Events like Musica Libera demonstrate how music can serve therapeutic and social functions beyond traditional concert settings, enriching communities and fostering collaboration.
