CALQ Launches Two-Month Residency in Art, Architecture and Environment in Paris

The Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) has introduced a new residency program in Paris, offering Quebec artists a unique opportunity to explore the intersections of art, architecture, and environmental issues.

The Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) has announced a new two-month residency in Paris, specifically designed for Quebec artists whose practices are rooted in visual arts or architectural research connected to environmental issues. This residency aims to provide artists with the opportunity to explore the relationships between artistic creation, architecture, the environment, and various types of territories, including urban, peripheral, peri-urban, and rural contexts.

The selected artist will be hosted at the Centre des Récollets in Paris for a period of eight weeks. During their stay, they will receive professional support from the team at the Pavillon de l’Arsenal, a well-known institution in Paris dedicated to architecture and urban planning. This support is intended to help the artist further their research and creative experimentation within the framework of the residency.

Projects proposed for this residency must be relevant to the current ecological transformations. The themes that can be addressed include issues related to housing, built forms, resources, materials, uses, communal spaces, landscapes, and innovative ways of conceiving, representing, and transforming living environments in the era of climate change.

The residency is part of a reciprocal agreement. In exchange, an artist from France will undertake a two-month residency in Quebec, with the participation of the Fondation Grantham. This reciprocal residency is scheduled to take place between April and May 2027, fostering cross-cultural exchange and collaboration between Quebec and France.

The CALQ’s residency program is open to professional artists and writers who are seeking opportunities for renewal and discovery. The program is designed for those who wish to immerse themselves in other cultures or gain access to internationally recognized venues to conduct research and explore new creative directions.

The CALQ supports a broad network of studios, exchanges, and residency workshops across four continents. This network offers creators from all disciplines approximately forty opportunities for stays that stimulate their professional development. Destinations in this network include cities such as New York, Buenos Aires, Taipei, Paris, Rome, London, and Tokyo.

Applications for the Paris residency must be submitted by November 19, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. The type of support offered is categorized as studios and residencies, and the eligible disciplines for this particular residency are visual arts and architectural research. The program is intended to support research and experimentation at the intersection of art, architecture, and environmental issues.

Why it matters

This residency offers Quebec artists a valuable chance to engage deeply with pressing environmental issues through interdisciplinary research and creation in a major cultural hub. It also strengthens cultural exchange between Quebec and France, fostering international collaboration and professional growth for artists addressing ecological transformations.
