Government of Canada Allocates $583,200 to Four Toronto Arts and Culture Organizations

On September 9, 2026, the Government of Canada announced funding of $583,200 to support four performing arts and festival organizations in Toronto, enhancing diverse cultural programming across the city.

The Government of Canada, represented by Karim Bardeesy, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry and Member of Parliament for Taiaiako’n–Parkdale–High Park, announced a total investment of $583,200 for four Toronto-based arts and culture organizations. This funding aims to support their programming from 2026 through 2028.

Buddies in Bad Times Theatre will receive $102,000 to support its Queer Voices Canada seasons in 2026 and 2027. The theatre focuses on amplifying voices of trans and gender non-conforming artists, 2Spirit artists, and QTBIPOC artists through vibrant programming. Alongside performances, the theatre will host community and educational events to foster dialogue around queer content and deepen audience engagement.

The CanAsian Dance Festival is allocated $109,800 for its CanAsian Dance Series seasons spanning 2026 to 2028. This funding will enable Asian diasporic dance artists to showcase their work and connect with communities across Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver. The festival’s programming includes dance and theatre performances by Indigenous artists from Ontario, other parts of Canada, and Australia.

Young People’s Theatre will receive $195,000 to support its 2026 to 2028 seasons. The theatre offers diverse programming that celebrates Canada’s cultural landscape, including Indigenous and Francophone works, alongside dance, puppetry, musical theatre, and new media. Its productions and educational initiatives aim to inspire children and youth, promoting creativity and empathy.

Native Earth Performing Arts, Canada’s oldest professional Indigenous performing arts company, also benefits from this funding. It is dedicated to developing, producing, and presenting Indigenous theatre, dance, and multidisciplinary works, nurturing Indigenous storytelling on stage.

This investment is part of the Canada Arts Presentation Fund, which provides financial assistance to organizations that professionally present arts festivals and performing arts series. The funding supports artists’ careers and strengthens Toronto’s cultural economy by enabling organizations to present diverse and innovative programming.

The announcement highlights the role of arts and culture in bringing communities together, fostering understanding, and enriching the city’s social and economic fabric. By supporting these organizations, the government aims to sustain Toronto’s vibrant cultural scene and promote inclusivity through the arts.

Why it matters

This funding supports the growth and sustainability of diverse arts organizations in Toronto, enabling them to present inclusive programming that reflects the city’s multicultural identity. It helps amplify underrepresented voices, including Indigenous, queer, and Asian diasporic artists, while fostering community engagement and cultural exchange. The investment also contributes to the local economy and the cultural vitality of Toronto, benefiting residents and visitors alike.
