Sharon Lockhart’s Fogo Exhibition Opens at The Power Plant in Toronto

The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery in Toronto has launched Fogo, a new exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Sharon Lockhart, showcasing works created on Newfoundland’s Fogo Island over four summers.

The Power Plant, in partnership with The Vega Foundation, is presenting Fogo, an exhibition of work by Los Angeles-based artist Sharon Lockhart. The works in the exhibition were created over four summers on Newfoundland’s Fogo Island. Lockhart is internationally recognized, and her practice often involves extended engagement with specific places and communities.

A central feature of the exhibition is WINDWARD, a film installation. This work features the same protagonists as other pieces in the show and brings to life the island’s striking geological formations, unique climate, and austere beauty. The installation reflects Lockhart’s ongoing interest in exploring place and the passage of time through her art.

The exhibition builds on core themes that have continued to define Lockhart’s career. These include an exploration of place, a durational approach to attention, and a long-term commitment to those who appear before her lens. The works on display are the result of a sustained artistic process and collaboration with the island’s community.

Fogo was organized and developed by curators Julia Paoli, Director & Curator at The Vega Foundation, and Kate Whiteway, Assistant Curator at The Vega Foundation. The project was developed in dialogue with the curatorial team at The Power Plant. Additional support for the exhibition was provided by The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery and Walter Phillips Gallery at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.

The tour of this exhibition has been made possible through the generous support of the Canada Council for the Arts. The works are presented courtesy of the artist and neugerriemschneider, Berlin. The exhibition offers visitors an opportunity to experience Lockhart’s approach to place and community through her lens, shaped by her time on Fogo Island.

Why it matters

This exhibition provides Canadian audiences with a rare opportunity to engage with a significant contemporary artist’s long-term project rooted in a unique Canadian locale.
